Article 92.12 of Ordinance Number 05-2539 has been revised and will be effective Monday, August 8, 2005.

This article states that it is the duty of every resident to provide, keep and maintain a watertight receptacle for their trash. Every receptacle must have a secure and tight-fitting lid or cover so that the contents are not accessible to dogs, cats, and other domestic animals or fowls, and so as to exclude flies. All surface water needs to be drained off of the garbage as nearly as possible before it is placed in the receptacle. Garbage receptacles need to be placed on the premises as near to an alley or street as possible so that they are easily accessible to the garbage collectors; these men will not go into yards to collect trash. No garbage receptacle is to be placed, kept, or maintained in any public street or alley within the city. This is to keep the trash from blocking streets, sidewalks, or other public ways. There is also a limit of five bags of trash per week for each residence. These bags shall not exceed 40 pounds in weight. All trash must be placed in a bag and in a container.

Article 92.12 also states that any newly constructed residence within the city limits is required to use a garbage receptacle that can be purchased at the City's Street Department at 605 Hale Road. The current price is $86.50. Payment can be made with cash or check made out to the City of Shelbyville. Credit/debit cards are accepted for a $3.75 service fee. Payment must be made before the receptacle is received. If the resident does not have a vehicle that can transport the receptacle, the Street Department will provide delivery at no charge.
