Shelby County Project Lifesaver

The primary mission of Project Lifesaver is to provide timely response to save lives and reduce potential injury for adults and children who wander due to Alzheimer's, autism, and other related conditions or disorders. The Shelbyville Police Department is a proud member of this program, through Shelby County EMA, as our officers are trained in the deployment of the locative technology used to locate clients enrolled in this program throughout Shelby County, Indiana.

Caregivers and clients are also issued Shelby County - Project Lifesaver identification cards to help provide information to responding officers in the event of an emergency.

Is Project Lifesaver Right for Your Family?

Project Lifesaver is a proactive program developed to help quickly find members of the community who have a cognitive disorder and a propensity to wander.  Those enrolled in the program will be issued a small radio transmitter to wear on their wrist or ankle 24/7.  Each transmitter has a frequency that is unique to the client, allowing our first responder teams to track them should they wander away from their caregiver.

Project Lifesaver is available to any citizen who meets the following requirements:

  • Has a cognitive disorder (dementia, Alzheimer's, autism, TBI, down syndrome, or other related condition or disorder)
  • Has a habit of wandering
  • Has a caregiver 24/7 (i.e. they are always with at least one person who can call 911 if they wander off)

If Project Lifesaver sounds right for your family member, we would love to hear from you. Please reach out to our program coordinator, Denis Ratekin, Emergency Management Diector. In your initial email, please identify yourself, the client's name, and why you think your loved one would be a good fit for our program.
